ESPN And Jacobson Respond To Roast Comments

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

I was going to use the word finally in the title considering this first got press on January 14th, but that would just be splitting hairs. ESPN in a response to the Catholic League has suspended our dear vodka drinker a week, and has now issued a statement on her behalf.....

"I am sorry. My remarks about Notre Dame were foolish and insensitive. I respect all religions and did not mean anything derogatory by my poorly chosen words. I also deeply regret the embarrassment I've caused ESPN and Mike and Mike.

"My actions at the roast were inappropriate and in no way represent who I am. I won't make excuses for my behavior, but I do hope I can be forgiven for such a poor lack of judgment."
I guess we don't know exactly what she said but it seems odd to me she would call them "Notre Dame" remarks. I'm pretty sure the Catholic League wasn't as upset as the "F-Notre Dame" comment but rather the "F-Jesus" that she may have let out. Either way it's done with and people will most certainly forget about it in a few weeks or until someone else says something dumb. I'm with the majority of people that think context needs to be taken into account. It was a roast and worse things have been said in that forum (see: Lisa Lampanelli).

Here's the video from Dana's own show First Take in regards to her statement....

The best part of the video is that wasn't what aired earlier during the live show. Michael Kim tried to go to the graphic with the quote, but it failed so he awkwardly moved on to an Alstott story.

It's time to move on from this one, but not before I head to the airwaves to talk about it! I'll be on Sporting News Radio with Matt Spiegel at 3:30 to discuss this whole fiasco and you can listen along if you please. Good times.

I disrespect all religions and Jacobson for not standing by her remarks.

And I didn't know that Notre Dame football was part of a religion, anyway. Is Charlie Weiss their God?

Why is this such an issue? Roasts are supposed to be about saying the otherwise taboo. More importantly, IT DIDN'T AIR.

What she said was way worse than what Kelly Tilghman said. What if she said "bleep Allah?" You think she would have a job today? No.

There was nothing wrong with what she said just as there was nothing wrong with what Kelly said. You shouldn't overreact to something just because other people overreacted to something else.

If she said, Fuck Allah, it probably would have resulted in a standing ovation.

I am equally shocked and impressed that ESPN addressed this issue on the front page of its website. Usually the "ESPN news" on the front page is reserved for them to tell you that the network just reached a deal to televise Conference USA football games until 2014.

The nitwits on WEEI in Boston were screeching about this story on the afternoon drive. The guests included Tony Massaroti of the Herald. The jist of their "discussion" was "How was this story not reported?"
Nice sleuthing there Tony. Was Ron Borges not available for background?

Well, in fairness, anon, the comments in question were made 12 days ago, and now they're just coming to light in the "mainstream media" (and several days since the suspension took place). This is one they were trying to sweep under the rug and hoped nobody would notice. And it would have happened if it wasn't for those damn meddling bloggers.

Damn it. Why is this such a big deal? So she said this? Why do we have to be so protective of people and their damn mythological beliefs?

ESPN has just terminated its dealings with anonymous poster. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

IF she respects "all religions" -- why is she only apologizing to Catholics?
Poor decision ESPN.

I'm surprised WEEI didn't bring on Curt "Look At Me!" Schilling for his thoughts.

>>> What she said was way worse than what Kelly Tilghman said.

Not even close. Talking about killing someone (even if it's a joke) is far worse than disrespecting someone's religion. Funny how the same people who usually bitch about political correctness are crying for blood when they're on the receiving end.

Guys in Iraq are saying 'Fuck Jesus' all the time. What makes Beano Cooke's bunch that higher on the food chain?

Jan 23, 2008, 8:39:00 PM

I would have more respect for her if she just screamed, "It was a freaking roast, people. Get a clue."

I guess the thing was, roast or not, that this was an ESPN-organized event, so that's why she had to go graze for a week. I didn't know that (at least, that's what ESPN's Ombudswoman said on some Fighting Irish blog).
Until the whole video surfaces (if someone not named ESPN will pay the price of whomever is holding it hostage), this has to go away. I'd rather hear drivel about LeBron's new shoe looking like Yankee pinstripes than this anymore.

I thought it looked like Michael Kim was going cry. Take it easy Mike. It will be ok lil' Buddy. On the WEEI front, Glen Ordway used AA as his point of reference for the story.

Odd, Wilbon can make ignorant comments regarding Catholic Church in the St Louis area and nothing happens to him. Going to a Jesuit school and being Catholic are two different things.
