NFL Open Thread - Week 16 Late Games

Sunday, December 21, 2008

Brian Westbrook, doing the proper stretching for the game against the Skins. Quick notes:

  • Two Large Ben picks have led to a major point swing in Tennessee's favor. Chris Johnson and LenDale White have a six a piece, and Kerry Collins hooked up with Justin Gage early with a bullet for a score. Large Ben has thrown two TD passes. 24-14, Titans, 6:30 left.
  • Two picks by Shaun Hill have the 49ers down 16-3 to the awful, awful Rams. 16-3, 5 minutes left.
  • Shootout in Arrowhead! 31-all tie between Chiefs and Fins. Two TDs for Pennington and Thigpen on the passing end, Ted Gin and Ricky Williams with rushing scores for Miami. Larry Johnson and Thigpen also rushed for scores. 8 minutes left.
  • 4 TD passes by Philip Rivers and a pick six by Antoine Cason make up the majority of the Chargers' scoring. 41-24 over Tampa Bay, this one's almost done and SD will be watching and rooting for Buffalo in the late games.
  • There's 10 minutes left in the snow in Foxborough, and the snow has been the only pretty thing about this game. Matt Leinart is in at QB for the Cards, who are getting blanked by the Pats 47-0. 3 TD passes by Matt Cassel, 2 rushing TDs for LaMont Jordan, and 4 FGs.
  • Detroit is now officially 0-15 after getting ass-nailed by the Saints 42-7. 351 yards passing and two TDs for Drew Brees, and four different rushers added TDs for New Orleans.
  • A pick six by Leon Hall and a Ryan Fitzpatrick TD pass to Chris Henry put the Bengals over the Browns 14-0.
Now, your late games:

Fox:

Philadelphia at Washington - Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Pam Oliver
Atlanta at Minnesota - Dick Stockton, Brian Baldinger and Laura Okmin

CBS:

NY Jets @ Seattle - Gus Johnson, Steve Tasker
Buffalo @ Denver - Ian Eagle, Solomon Wilcots
Houston @ Oakland - Bill Macatee, Steve Beuerlein

This question was brought up in the Early Games thread, the question being why we got to see all of the New England slaughter. According to another site, a person there said that because the other two games didn't sell out and thus were blocked out in their home cities, you can't switch to them (?) I think the NFL can F off and die for the whole blackout rule and how it's disgracefully bad and stupid, but yeah that's allegedly why that happened.

Oh, and the NFL can also F off for the rule saying that at 4:15, you can't watch any game that you get switched to after your game is finished with. It's off to Justin.tv to try and watch the end of the Dolphins game.

The NFL has some dumb rules. Why can't they show more than 15 minutes of the early game that runs late (CBS isn't allowed to show the conclusion of the Fins-Chiefs game).

Man is the Metrodome dead today. I mean it's not like the fans have to be all that loud considering the sound waves just bounce all over the place in there. Was it too cold to tailgate? Are they refusing to sell beer in the concessions? For a game with playoff implications, this is SAD.

Had Stockton and Baldinger last week...the Georgia Dome sounded exactly this loud then too.

While the Bengals have regressed from their playoff berth a few years ago, the Lions are the new Bengals.

The Lions would be smart to trade this year's number one given their proclivity for totaling blowing a top 3 pick (unless the Packers take Tony Mandarich ahead of Barry Sanders) but all of the talk radio listeners in Metro Detroit will make it clear that some douchenozzle (h/t JamesCraven) ought to be number one. And Ford/whoever becomes the Lions 6th head coach in the last 9 years will believe them.

The same talk radio listeners will then show up at the game wearing the other team's colors and only drink 11, rather than 12, beers to show their displeasure.

Wont be decided until after tomorrow's night game. Likely candidates are Dolphins @ Jets, Cowboys @ Eagles, even possibly Giants @ Vikings, according to PFT.

I guess considering today's results maybe SD/Denver.

Please explain why the national media love affair with Brett Favre continues ... he makes SEVERAL crucial mistakes, including the predictable interception there at the end of today's game ... AND STILL is chosen for the pro-bowl over several more talented and better performing QB's. Endlessly annoying, I have to say.
